The PhD will be developed in the PhD program of IHCANTABRIA, under the supervision of Prof. Javier Lara and Prof. María Maza, as part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network: Sediment Transport and Morphodynamics in Marine and Coastal Waters with Engineering Solutions (SEDIMARE) 2023-2027.
The objective of the PhD is to increase the knowledge on the evolution of the beach profile during the action of storms. Both laboratory tests and numerical simulations, the latter using CFD, will be carried out to jointly analyze wave hydrodynamics and sediment transport for random sea states. The influence of infragravity waves and their interaction with the beach profile on sandy beaches will be understood. In addition, the hydraulic behavior of seawalls located on sandy bottoms will be analyzed, including the study of the influence of beach profile change on the functional and structural behavior of these structures. Finally, sediment transport in and around coastal ecosystems will be analyzed to study the influence of these ecosystems in reducing coastal erosion. It is planned a one 3-month secondment at UNIVERSITA POLITECNICA DELLE MARCHE and one 2-month secondment at DELTARES, covered by the SEDIMARE project.
