1 Predoctoral Researcher (Climate Risk Adaptation and Resilience) Nº CONV._FIHAC/14_2025

In accordance with the Human Resources programming of the Fundación Instituto de Hidráulica Ambiental de Cantabria and with the needs of the projects programmed in its Action Plan, it is necessary to fill the position of 1 Predoctoral Researcher.

CALL FOR THE SELECTION OF RESEARCHER FPI. LIURBADAPT Project

We are looking for a researcher!

If you are an engineer or architect, you are interested in research, you are curious and motivated, and you are interested in climate change adaptation in urban environments… this is your opportunity to pursue a PhD!

The LIURBADAPT project aims to generate scientific knowledge to develop a methodological framework to implement adaptation strategies to climate change in urban waterfronts.

Under the framework of this project, you will enjoy an FPI contract (predoctoral contracts for the training of doctors) associated with the project, which will allow you to improve your training in the field of adaptation to climate change, combining methodological developments and statistical techniques.

The development and achievements of the project will enable managers, both public and private, to meet the challenge of climate change in coastal areas exposed to flood risks by providing the knowledge and tools necessary to, first, assess climate change risks through a multilevel and multi-scale approach and, second, plan adaptation measures prioritizing nature-based solutions, wherever possible, to result in more sustainable and resilient urban fronts.

This will be achieved by developing a methodology that integrates the most advanced knowledge in maritime climate modeling and its interaction with natural and artificial ecosystems, following an approach that combines global and local scales. The global scale will allow the identification of homogeneous climate zones based on maritime climate characteristics and exposure, vulnerability and response characteristics, leading to the definition of archetypes. In addition, these archetypes will be defined considering the presence or absence of ecosystems and their typology, as well as their vulnerability and response in order to characterize the risk in those cases and define adaptation measures that prioritize nature-based solutions. The project will also result in a portfolio of adaptation measures applicable to each of the identified archetypes, which will be evaluated at the local scale and then, based on the integration between scales, these portfolios will be scaled to all the areas included in the global scale.

The study to be carried out seeks to integrate all the results obtained to give rise to specific and flexible adaptation strategies, considering the particularities and unique needs of each urban waterfront in the face of climate challenges.

Key words: climate change adaptation, coastal hazards, archetypes, nature-based solutions, coastal protection solutions.

Candidate profile:

The candidate sought is an engineer or architect willing to apply for an FPI grant, with a desire to learn, research, innovate and a strong motivation to do a PhD, as well as the ability to combine autonomous and team work.

You should have a good level of English, a good academic record and social skills. The candidate will join a young, dynamic, competitive and international environment, within the framework of a reference research center, in constant growth, where he/she will develop his/her research related to the marine environment.
